Research and Planning- Analysis contents page

Q Magazine Contents Page.
  • Firstly, you can see that the colours; red, white and black have been carried through by the front cover, to show it's part of the magazine and also representing the genre being used.
  • The main image is a long shot, this photograph represents the genre of the magazine too as you can tell there a band, by the clothing used and scene, this photograph could also represent class in a way, due to the seriousness and background scene also the positioning of the four.
  • The web address at the top of the page tells me the magazine may have a large audience and is popular for people to be viewing it online.
  • This is a long running magazine you can tell by the section 'Every month' this is shows its an on going magazine and has been for some time.
  • You can see that this magazine is targeting a audience of more males aged 18+ by the articles and photographs.
  • Separated into three sections; 'features', 'Every month' and 'Review' is done so the target audience can find exactly what they want to read about within the music magazine.

Research and Planning; First Draft.

This is my first draft of my Music magazine front cover.
  • Ive decided to use the 'Rocket ship' font that I downloaded from www.dafont.com, the font seems to represent the genre of my magazine and also the name, Ive decided to place it on a slant and the effect that it's breaking through the page.
  • The bar code is placed on the bottom right corner witch follows the conventions of other music magazines.

Research and Planning - Masthead ideas

This is the masthead Ive decided to use on my front cover, it represents the genre 'Indie' as the font has a gritty rough edge that tells the target audience this music magazine is down to earth with a seriousness to it, the font is 'masterplan'

These are my masthead ideas, I used different fonts and different sizes to compare what one i preferred and would attract my target audience more.

Research and Planning - My target audience

Target Audience
  • Age- My magazine will be targeted at 16-25 years, focusing more on the students. I've decided this on my results from my questionnaire I carried out. They will be interested in reading music magazines such as Kerrang and Q which were shown in my questionnaire results.
  • Gender- The magazine will focus on both male and female, however by using my questionnaire be more focused on the females. Therefore I will use more feminine ideas/stories to pull female gender in to reading my magazine.
  • Occupation- The occupation that the target audience will be for students who may have part time jobs and unskilled workers, the reason being as the magazine will be affordable to them.
  • Class/Wealth- My target audience may be middle class, therefore parents may buy the magazine for them.
  • Interests- My target audience will be interested in the newest releases and music charts, I found this by using the data collected from my questionnaire results. Also would enjoy going to gigs and tours of the popular artists and bands.
  • Outlook for the future- Their outlook on the future may becoming a musician or a recording artist or have some sort of job in the music industry, however may just do music as a hobby.

Research and Planning; Analysis of music magazine.

  • Audience- The audience for this magazine would be female and male, aged between 20-40 years old this would be the primary audience, people who possibly be interested in the latest music and like to go to gigs and tours also enjoy listening to new and old music. The secondary audience may be above aged between 17-20 who may be well educated interested in playing an instrument and news in the music industry. The reasons for choosing this audience would be because the magazine selling price is rather expensive and young students may not want to or afford to pay this amount.
  • Representation- The medium long shot of a solo artist 'Lady GAGA' is represented on the front cover, she is a well known artist world wide which will grab attention. She is placed center frame so she's the main focus on the front cover, she's looking seductive in a way targeting the males to the music magazine.
  • Genre- The genre of this music magazine would be pop-rock/indie, you can see this by the artists used, and the colours used around the page ; grey's,blacks and whites, these colours represent the genre too, as they are dark, similar to the music in a way.
  • Layout- The layout of the front cover is quite simple and not overloaded with too much information to put the reader off. The masthead, located on the top left hand side of the cover stand's out and is simple and has a bold font representing the audience in some way; targeting a sophisticated and older generation therefore not too complicated. The stories chosen represent it's a music magazine too. This cover follows the conventions of other music magazine as it includes bar-code, photograph, Masthead, stories, main story.
  • Media Language- The photograph is a medium long shot, this may have been took to show her outfit and her facial expression. The colours of the magazine may have been chosen by the colour of the props on the photo; black's and white. Her prop doesn't look so innocent and looks unusual representing the genre of rock and how different the artist is too. Her hair and make up stands out and looks creative.
  • Socio-economic groupings- This magazine would be targeted at groupings of b and C1 which are teachers who are semi-professionals who attended college and university and skilled workers , it also may attract C2 group who are semi skilled workers such as plumbers who attended college.
  • Audience- The audience would be aimed at a younger generation aged 16-25, aiming at both genders however attracting more females, I feel this due to the choice of male photo's on the front cover and also colours which are quite feminine ; pink, yellow.
  • Representation- The main photograph centre frame is a medium long shot, this is located centre frame again to grab the readers attention. You can tell the photo represents the music for this magazine by the way he's dressed and his hair and make up is quite dark blacks, grey.
  • Genre- Kerang is a rock music magazine.
  • Layout- The masthead located across the top of the cover, the use of black bold font with a sharp edge, the font also has a 'broken mirror' affect, this links to the slug line 'life is loud' representing the genre of this magazine. The three colours; pink, black and yellow stick out during the magazine even tho how hectic the page is with different stories and photographs, this represents the genre of the magazine and music how its not clean and crisp but the opposite and also how different the layout can represent the age of the audience.
  • media Language- The cinematography on this front cover is used well, on the main photograph is a medium long shot, this hasn't being used for any other photos surrounding it, there for this photograph is exposed mostly showing the reader he's part of the main story or is in focus the most. The photo's surrounding this one are close up and mid shots to show their expression and represent bigger photo's of them will be inside the magazine it's self.
  • Socio-Economic groupings- would be E-students, D- unskilled workers for example grocery worker who didn't need to attend college or university for their job, also group C- semi-skilled workers who had attended college for their job. I have chosen these groups as the magazine is not expensive to buy there for these groups would interested in buying this magazine rather than an expensive one.

Research and Planning - Questionnaire feedback

Through the process of completing my questionnaire for my music magazine I've found out that more females completed the questionnaire aged between 17-18 years old, therefore this would be my target audience to aim for. The most popular genre were indie and rock, this helps me a lot as the genre I've chosen to do is indie. I then asked what colours associate with indie and rock, black, white and red became the most popular choice. Q music magazine was the most read by the audience, therefore this may mean I may have to simplify my music magazine and design it so it's clean and not to hectic. My last question was to find out what the audience would like to see in a music magazine, new releases, tours and gigs and also music charts were extremely popular, this has helped me to know what to add onto my contents page and double spread page. Overall producing this music magazine questionnaire has helped me to have an idea what my target audience is looking for in a indie music magazine and help me to now design the magazine.

This is an example of the questionnaire I carried out for my music magazine, this was to help to find out information from the audience.

Research and Planning: Indesign tutorial

This is my document I created when I was introduced to in-design, this was to help me further on through my magazine and planning my college and music magazine.

  • First I had to choose a film that I wanted to review, I then used the Internet to research an image to use on my film review, I then saved this to my personal folder.
  • I then placed a film title, this was similar to photo-shop by clicking on the 'T' tool on the left hand side of the sidebar, after I wrote the title I then could change the colour, style and font of the text by using the drop down menu at the top of the page.
  • I then created guides, columns for my text this was done by clicking on create to guidelines, I then adjusted how many columns I wanted was three.
  • I placed a box over the document and then filled it with a Blue colour then used the gradient tool half across to give the effect that it fades half way through for my background.
  • The text was placed there already when I added the columns however I changed the front size, text and colour.

Research and Planning: Audience Feedback.

I created a questionnaire so that I could find an idea of what the audience would like and disliked about my college magazine and in the helping of my music magazine.
